WHO IS WRITING THE FUTURE
|
From this perspective, Baha'is view the 20th century, with all its obvious disasters, as "the century of light", in which humanity has taken the first faltering steps out of the darkness of fear, mutual suspicion and mistrust. These tumultuous years have witnessed a transformation in the way the earth's inhabitants regard each other, as we continue to grow in awareness, that we are interdependent citizens of one homeland. The unification of the whole human race is neither a remote utopian vision, nor a matter of choice. It constitutes the next, inescapable stage in the process of social evolution, a stage toward which all the experience of past and present is impelling us. The history of tribes, peoples and nations has effectively reached its conclusion. We are witnessing the beginning of the history of humankind, of a human race slowly and painfully awakening to a realization of its own oneness--with all that implies for our collective economic, political, social and cultural life. More than one hundred years ago, Baha'u'llah said: However great the turmoil in the years immediately ahead, the period into which humanity is now moving will surely open to every individual, every institution and every community on earth unprecedented opportunities to participate in writing our own future. *Baha'u'llah (1817-92), founder of the Baha'i Faith, |
