There has been an active Bahá'í community in Courtenay since the early 1980s. Courtenay's first Spiritual Assembly – a nine-member body that guides the administrative affairs of the local community – was incorporated 1 March 1996. Each year, on April 21, the Spiritual Assembly is re-elected by the local community.
