CENTENARY OF THE BAHÁ'Í FAITH IN

THE UNITED KINGDOM

1998-99

In 1898 Mrs Mary Thornburgh-Cropper, an American living in London, was the first person in the country to enroll in the Faith, and in 1899 Miss Ethel Rosenberg became the first British person living there to accept it. With the enrolment of these two remarkable women, the Bahá'í community of the United Kingdom was born.

From the Prime Minister, 10 Downing Street, London

21 March 1999

I congratulate the Baha'i community on the centenary of its establishment in this country. I share your principle of equality between all people and welcome your encouragement of dialogue between those of different faiths and cultures. I hope your Centenary and New Year celebrations are a great success.

[Signed: Tony Blair]
